Thousands protest in London on Nakba Day, condemn British support for Israel

AhlulBayt News Agency: Thousands of demonstrators gathered in London on Saturday to mark the 77th anniversary of Nakba Day, protesting against Israel’s ongoing occupation and military operations in Gaza and the West Bank.

Nakba, meaning “catastrophe” in Arabic, refers to the mass displacement of around 750,000 Palestinians following the establishment of Israel on May 15, 1948. Protesters condemned the British government’s support for Israel, particularly its arms sales, accusing it of complicity in the suffering of the Palestinian people.

The rally, organized by the Palestinian Forum in Britain, was backed by several advocacy groups, including the Palestinian Solidarity Campaign, Friends of Al-Aqsa, the British Muslim Association, and numerous civil society organizations.

Beginning in Victoria Square, demonstrators chanted slogans before marching toward Whitehall Street, where key government offices—including the Prime Minister’s Office—are located.

The protest took place amid escalating calls for a ceasefire in Gaza and urgent humanitarian relief for Palestinians. Protesters demanded an immediate halt to British arms sales to Israel and stronger diplomatic pressure to end the violence.

This demonstration follows weeks of global protests in solidarity with Palestinians, as humanitarian organizations warn of worsening conditions in Gaza. Organizers vowed to persist in their efforts to hold the British government accountable for its stance on Israel’s actions.

Waving Palestinian flags, protesters carried placards with messages such as “Stop the war in Gaza,” “End the occupation,” “No to the siege,” and “Stop the genocide.” Some banners also urged action to prevent history from repeating itself, warning against “another Nakba.”
